Meeting set in Castine for vote on landfill issue

CASTINE — On Aug. 1, residents will vote on whether to spend now to save later.

According to town finance officer Bob Owens, just over $300,000 is needed to cap the town’s landfill. The town is trying to meet the state’s deadline of Oct. 9 to qualify for up to 75 percent reimbursement for the costs of the closing, which will become available if voters approve a $20 million state bond issue in November.

In anticipating the October deadline and the bond issue, many communities have planned to officially close their landfills this fall, Owens said. Castine residents can vote on the local expenditure at a special meeting set for 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at Emerson Hall.

Should the bond issue pass, which some officials doubt, the town’s share of the project cost would be about $75,000.

“It makes sense to do it now,” Owens said of the capping. Failure to meet the Oct. 9 deadline would reduce maximum reimbursement to 50 percent, by the next deadline, and to 25 percent by the deadline after that.
