Genetics expert to speak about breast cancer gene

BAR HARBOR — Dr. Mary-Claire King, a widely known genetics expert from the University of California at Berkeley, will present “Family Concerns with the Genetics of Breast Cancer” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at Mount Desert Island High School.

The program is being co-sponsored by the Jackson Laboratory and the Center for Human Genetics and is being offered as a free public service to promote better understanding of the inherited factors involved in breast cancer.

King proved in 1990, after a decade of research, that a gene for inherited breast cancer can be isolated, and is in the forefront of identifying the defective gene.
