The large number of candidates for the gubernatorial nomination may very likely leave us a “default” Democratic candidate — who will become the next governor of Maine. I am writing to urge readers who vote in the Democratic primary not to squander their votes on minor candidates but to cast them where they count: for the one viable alternative to more-of-the-same-Joe Brennan. That alternative is Bob Woodbury.
Joe Brennan, mind you, would be a satisfactory governor. But Woodbury is both a stronger candidate and a more promising governor for Maine in the 1990s. He carries none of Brennan’s tax-and-spend history. He presents a fresh, creative vision for a balanced Maine. And he has the executive experience of running the largest public organization in Maine: the University of Maine System.
Bob Woodbury is the only candidate who can fulfill this promise. Gordon A. Donaldson Jr. Lamoine
