Gamache after welterweight title

Joey Gamache is not sitting around and waiting for his mandatory shot at the World Boxing Association’s lightweight title.

Gamache is the No. 1 contender in both the WBA and the International Boxing Federation. While he waits for another shot at the WBA belt, Gamache is going after a different championship.

Promoter Johnny Bos has announced that “The Pride of Lewiston” will step into the ring again on Tuesday, Jan. 25. Gamache will challenge champion David Santos for the North American Boxing Federation junior welterweight title.

The Gamache bout will be one of two championship fights on the card. Jeremy Williams will defend his WBC North American heavyweight title against Marshall Tillman. Bos said both bouts will be televised live on the USA Network.

Santos is a 27-year-old Californian with a 20-2 record. The lefthander is expected to provide Gamache with a top-notch fight.

The Jan. 25 bout also should help Gamache prepare for his eventual WBA lightweight title match against Olzubek Nazarov of Russia. That will be the first time in Gamache’s professional career that he faces a reigning champion.

“I feel Joey needs a tough fight before going for the world title,” Bos said. “I think he needs a challenge.”

Gamache improved his record to 34-1, including 22 knockouts, with a first-round TKO over Kyu Han Park on Dec. 8 at the Augusta State Armory. He fought five times in 1993, winning each time.
