Lubec letter carrier charged in theft

LUBEC — A U.S. Postal letter carrier, Bernard Mathews, 48, of Lubec, will be arraigned Wednesday, Jan. 5, in 4th District Court at Machias to answer a complaint charging him with stealing $300 in cash from an elderly Lubec woman.

Mathews was arrested Tuesday, Dec. 21, at his home by Deputy Mike Crabtree and Postal Inspector Sid Kerr from the Postal Inspection Service office in New Hampshire. Mathews was taken to the Washington County Jail at Machias, where he was charged with theft.

Later, he was released on $75 cash bail, pending arraignment. The investigation is continuing, Crabtree said Wednesday, to determine whether Mathews was involved in taking any other funds.

The investigation that led to the arrest was conducted during the past several months by the Lubec division of the Washington County Sheriffs Department in cooperation with Kerr, the U.S. Attorneys Office, and Lubec Postmaster Ron Benner.
