Quilting bee to aid Midwest flood victims

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Something akin to an old-fashioned quilting bee is being organized by a Dover-Foxcroft woman who wants to help flood victims in the Midwest.

Ellen Dow is looking for volunteers to show up at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Chapel with their sewing machines ready to spend the day making quilts.

“How successful this project will be and how many quilts will be made during the day will be determined completely by the public response,” Dow said.

Anyone who can sew a straight line on the sewing machine is welcome. The quilts will be made in assembly-line fashion, using quick-piecing methods, Dow said.

Those who do not sew, but wish to help may assist with several nonsewing tasks, Dow said. Knowledge of quilt-making isn’t necessary as information and guidance will be available. Rotary cutting tools, pressing equipment and other materials will be provided.

In addition to volunteers, Dow is looking for donations of fabric for the project. She has requested that fabrics be 100-percent cotton calico prints which have been washed and pressed, and are ready to use. The pieces must be either 1-yard or 2-yard lengths. Fabric may be delivered to Dow at her Mechanic Street home in Dover-Foxcroft. This will make it possible to have some pieces cut and ready for sewing on the day of the quilting, she said.

For more information, contact Dow at 564-2589.
