PORTLAND — U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell announced Monday that he will appoint state Rep. Mary Cathcart, D-Orono, and Portland attorney Kathryn Monahan Ainsworth to the Commission on Child and Family Welfare.
The 15-member commission is responsible for studying issues that affect children and developing recommendations for the president and the Congress on how to promote the best interests of children.
“Mary Cathcart and Kathryn Monahan Ainsworth are superbly qualified to serve on the Commission on Child and Family Welfare,” the majority leader said in a statement. “Each of them has extensive experience working on behalf of children, and possess firsthand knowledge of the juvenile justice system. Their backgrounds will enable them to make valuable contributions to the commission,” the senator said.
