Michigan man pleads innocent in two assaults

LEWISTON — A Michigan construction worker charged in two “bumper assaults” in Maine has served time for a sexual offense in Michigan, authorities said.

Dennis Meachum, 26, of Paw Paw, Mich., was on parole when he came to Maine for a construction job in Freeport, the officials said.

Meachum is accused of attacking women in Greene and Auburn after bumping into the rear of their cars. Police said there have been five car bumpings in Maine in recent weeks, including two in which the women refused to pull over after being hit.

He pleaded innocent on Thursday at his arraignment on various charges, including attempted kidnapping and assault.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Meachum was convicted in 1986 of armed robbery and second-degree criminal sexual conduct and sentenced to concurrent prison terms of seven to 25 years and five to 15 years, respectively.

His parole officer, Marie Barge, said she was unaware that Meachum had left Michigan and said that would be a violation of his parole.

Meachum was arrested Sunday following an early morning assault on a woman in Greene, police said.

Meachum said in court records that he was single and the father of a 4-month-old daughter.
