The Maine Department of Transportation will close the sidewalk on the old Bangor-Brewer bridge connecting Bangor to State Street in Brewer, during the July 4th fireworks display.
The extensive rusting of the support brackets has reduced the ability of the sidwalk to support heavy loads, although it is strong enough for normal pedestrian use, said Everett Barnard, MDOT bridge maintenance engineer.
A temporary barrier will be put up between the sidewalk and roadway for the full length of the bridge before July 4 but pedestrians will be able to use the sidewalk until a few hours before the fireworks, Bernard said.
