BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick Naval Air Station will celebrate its 50th anniversary with the Great State of Maine Airshow, Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25, at the station.
Admission to all Navy airshows and public visits are free. Gates will open at 8 a.m. both days.
Featured acts for the show will include the Holiday Inn-Coca Cola Aerobatic Team and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team. Other military acts will include a demonstration of the speed and agility of the F-117 Stealth fighter, which cruises at just below Mach 1. The U.S. Air Force will not confirm the maximum speed, but it is estimated at over Mach 1. The only way to detect the plane is visually, because its sound arrives after the plane has passed over.
The Holiday Inn-Coca Cola team flies Pitts Special S-2 biplanes capable of modern aerobatics while capturing the look of early American aviation.
Other military aircraft scheduled to fly in the airshow include the F-14 Tomcat, German Toranado, B-52 Stratofortress, A-6 Intruder, P-3 Orion, HH-1N Twin Huey and more. Aircraft also will be displayed on the ground, where visitors may climb aboard for close-up views.
The Community Expo will be featured again this year, with a hangar full of offerings by civic and nonprofit groups raising money and public awareness of their services to Maine people.
