LaVerdiere’s plans cuts at several stores

WATERVILLE — Fewer than 100 people are affected by cuts at LaVerdiere’s Super Drug Stores that will force some full-time workers to either take part-time jobs or leave the company, officials said.

President Stephen LaVerdiere said this week that the cuts were targeted at specific stores after an analysis of the chain. “This program is not a layoff program. The plan that we have is minor expense control,” LaVerdiere said Monday.

The president said the cuts are not linked to the arrival of Wal-Mart in Maine, where the retailing giant has opened or plans to open at least 17 stores. “We’ve got a healthy and growing company,” said LaVerdiere.
