UM tips Dolphins; Lions halt Bears

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Freshman righthander Matt Cassidy of Calais hurled 3 1/3 innings of three-hit, two-run relief and Glen Stupienski paced a 13-hit attack with four hits as the University of Maine’s Black Bears outlasted Jacksonville 9-7 to salvage a split of two games here Sunday.

Penn State’s Justin Craig and Jeff Burris had combined on a seven-hit shutout in the opener to beat Maine 6-0.

Maine’s Saturday game against Jacksonville was canceled because of bad weather.

In the nightcap, Cassidy came on in relief of winner Jason Rajotte in the sixth inning and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout. Jacksonville had scored twice off Rajotte in the sixth to pull within 8-5.

Cassidy was nicked for two runs in the seventh, but hurled scoreless ball the rest of the way to pick up his first college save. Rajotte got the win and is now 1-2.

Stupienski had a double among his four hits and scored twice Stupienski had a double among his four hits and scored twice for the 3-8 Bears. Shanan Knox homered and singled; Todd Livingston singled twice and scored twice and Gabe Duross had a pair of base hits.

Galen Williams had three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for Jacksonville. Gary Peterson doubled and singled and Dave Johnson doubled and drove in two runs. Dan Slater was the loser.

In the opener, Craig and Burris stranded 13 Bear runners while combining for 12 strikeouts.

Craig hurled four innings of five-hit baseball with eight strikeouts and two walks and Burris finished up for the win, allowing two hits over five innings with four strikeouts and three walks.

Ronnie Hewes, now 1-1, pitched well in defeat. He allowed six hits and three runs over six innings, but just one of the runs was earned. He struck out eight and walked two.

Dave Hall’s three hits, including a double, and Derrick Ryder’s triple and single paced Penn State. Phil Bertolotti and Kody Barto homered for the winners.

Stupienski’s three hits and Knox’s two paced Maine.
