Egg Festival seeks director to run pageant

PITTSFIELD — Will the Central Maine Egg Festival be the same without a queen and a princess? Festival organizers don’t want to find out, but they may be forced to.

With four months to go until the annual Pittsfield festival, the pageant has no director and no indication that one will be available, according to festival president Elaine Taylor.

“We have the funding. We have volunteers for specific assignments. We have someone to do choreography, publicity and help with getting the contestants. But no one is willing to take charge,” Taylor said.

The festival committee reluctantly discussed whether to discontinue the scholarship pageant at its Tuesday night meeting.

“It can be too late to plan even as early as April 1,” Taylor said. “But it could be done with dedication and enthusiasm.”

Anyone interested in coordinating the pageant or assisting the committee in finding a director may contact Taylor at 487-5416.

The annual scholarship pageant has been sponsored by the Sebasticook Valley Elks Lodge in recent years with a $1,000 scholarship for the queen and scholarships and prizes of lesser amounts for runners-up and the princess.

In addition, Taylor said, the pageant has become part of the feeder system for larger scholarship pageants around the state, including the Miss Maine competition.
