Nursing home restricts visitors

CARIBOU — The Caribou Nursing Home was closed to visitors Tuesday afternoon after an outbreak of an influenza virus contracted by 32 of the facility’s 105 patients.

“Starting Monday morning we found we had a rash of flu, or an epidemic coming through the house,” Administrator Michael Cyr said Wednesday.

Dr. Steven Nadeau, medical director, suggested officials contact the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta for direction.

“The center said when we have about one third of the house infected with a flu-like epidemic, we should restrict visitors for a minimum of five days,” Cyr said.

The facility will remain closed through Sunday and the medical conditions of the patients will be evaluated on Monday, Cyr said.

Some patients have been placed on anti-flu medications by their doctors, Cyr said. Flu shots in the fall are standard procedures, he added.
