State policeman on `Top Cops’

Lt. Richard Arnold of Belgrade, the director of the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory, will be featured on a segment of “Top Cops,” a CBS television program airing at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Arnold will narrate a re-enactment of a 1986 Augusta bank holdup in which he single-handedly apprehended the robber. Arnold was in the bank on his lunch hour when the robbery occurred. He followed the robber into the parking lot, fired a shot, and then arrested the lone gunman inside an adjacent department store.

A 25-year veteran of the Maine State Police, Arnold is the third Maine policeman to be featured on “Top Cops.” The others were Col. Andrew Demers, chief of the Maine State Police, and Michael Chitwood, chief of the Portland Police Department.
