Maine possible site for experiment in providing light rail car service

DEXTER — A Dexter man’s interest in seeing rail service revived in Maine apparently has led to the state’s being considered as a possible test site for a light rail car service.

David Rudolph of Dexter, who has been working on the creation of a light rail car manufacturing and transportation system for central Maine, received word this month that ABB Traction Inc., an international firm with U.S. offices in Trenton, N.J., is considering either Maine or Florida as a possible test site for its IC3 diesel light rail system.

Rudolph has been working on a proposal for the past year to build and set up a light rail transportation system for the central Maine area. The cars would be manufactured locally and powered electrically using trash-burning furnaces.

One of the key steps in his plan has been to create interest in Maine for such a commuter rail line system, he said.

Rudolph said that with ABB Traction Inc. expressing an interest in establishing a light rail car system in Maine, the need for such a commuter line soon would become evident and would provide evidence of the merits of such a system.
