University of Tampa Ramada Inn Classic
HUSSON vs. CULVER-STOCKTON
Time, site: Friday, 5:30 p.m., Tampa, Fla.
Records: Husson 10-1, Culver-Stockton 8-4
Key players: Husson – G Kristi Wildman (14.5 ppg), G Vicki Mazerall (14.2 ppg), F Steph Shaw (11 ppg), G Darci Collins (9.5 ppg), C Tara Leavitt (9.8 ppg); Culver Stockton – C Linda Logsdon (13.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg), F Carrie Connell (13.2 ppg, 10.2 rpg), F Amber Gunlock (7.4 ppg), G Jill Woodbury (6.9 ppg), G Amy Pollard (8.3 ppg, 3.5 apg)
Outlook: Good test for Husson women. The Culver-Stockton Wildcats went 22-11 last season and made it to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Div. II National Tournament. Every single player returns from that team. Plus, Wildcats Coach Kathy Turpin is an NAIA rater, so this will give the Braves a chance to impress a poll voter. Braves have won 10 straight and are averaging 84 points per game. Shaw must again come up big inside while guards will have to play one of their best games.
TAMPA vs. FLAGLER
Time, site: Friday, 7:30 p.m., Tampa, Fla.
Records: Tampa 5-4, Flager College 2-6
Key players: Tampa – G Tori Lindbeck (19.9 ppg), G Beth Browning (8.3 ppg, 9.3 apg), F Jeani Robinson (7.8 ppg, 4 rpg), F Kristi Izor (8.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg), C Crystal Ashley (12.4 ppg, 7.7 rpg); Flagler – F Heidi Nissen (14 ppg), C Jill Franck (16 ppg), G Dawn Bolinski, G Shannon McGaugh, F Andrea Berntsen
Outlook: The host Spartans are an NCAA Div. II team with some impressive individuals: Browning, a 5-6 point guard, is fourth in the nation in assists while Lindbeck likes to shoot from downtown (averaging four 3-pointers made a game and hits 49.3 percent of them). Tampa went 20-9 a year ago and lost only one player. The Saints of Flagler, 6-14 a year ago, are struggling to get started again this year, but have a nice 1-2 scoring punch in Nissen and Franck. Flagler Coach Joe Shannon is also an NAIA rater, which means more good news for Husson.
Tournament schedule: Consolation game Saturday at 5:30 p.m., followed by championship game.
