Latendresse leads Bears to title

RICHFIELD, Ohio – Redshirt sophomore left winger Mike Latendresse had scored four goals in his first 14 games in a University of Maine hockey uniform prior to Wednesday night’s Cleveland College Hockey Classic championship game against Bowling Green State University.

He matched that total in 60 minutes as his four goals, including two shorthanded scores, paced the Black Bears to a 6-2 win over the Falcons.

The shorthanded goals were Maine’s 12th and 13th of the season, leaving the Bears two shy of the school record set in the 1989-90 season.

The win extended Maine’s regular season unbeaten streak to 32 games (29-0-3) and its current winning streak to 18 games. Maine is now 19-0-1.

Bowling Green is 10-10 after having its four-game winning streak snapped.

The Bears spotted the Falcons a 1-0 lead when Jason Helbing took a pass from Jason Clark and jammed a five-footer past Bear goalie Garth Snow at the 5:43 mark. It was his ninth goal of the season.

But the Bears scored the next five goals, including two apiece in the first and third periods and the lone goal of the second period.

Latendresse tied it 1-1 at the 10:32 mark of the initial period with a shorthanded goal. He broke into the zone with Cal Ingraham on a two-on-one, held the puck and fired a 15-footer between the pads of senior goalie Angelo Libertucci.

Ingraham gave the Bears the lead for good at the 17:57 mark of the first period when he took a cross-ice pass from Jim Montgomery and flipped home his 24th goal of the season.

Bowling Green dominated the first period and outshot Maine 12-10 but Snow made 11 stops to keep the Bears ahead.

Latendresse’s second shorthanded goal was the only score in the second period as he took a pass from Montgomery, broke in alone on Libertucci and lifted the puck past Libertucci’s glove. That came at the 14:59 mark.

Justin Tomberlin opened the third period scoring by converting a wrap-around at the 3:07 mark and Latendresse made it 5-1 3:27 later when he took a Pat Tardif pass and roofed an off-balance shot.

Brett Harkins scored for Bowling Green on a penalty shot with 6:56 remaining but Latendresse capped his four-goal night by knocking home his own rebound with 3:32 remaining.

Snow finished with 23 saves and was chosen the All-Tournament goalie. He was joined on the All-Tourney team by Ingraham, Maine defenseman Chris Imes, Bowling Green’s Harkins and defenseman Jeff Wells and Cornell’s Tyler McManus.

Libertucci, who played in place of the injured Aaron Ellis, finished with 31 saves.
