Braves capture tourney

Men’s College Basketball

PRESQUE ISLE – Raymond Alley scored 21 points and Scott Brown put in 19 to lead the Husson College Braves past the University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls 82-72 for the Star City Invitational title in men’s basketball action Saturday.

The College of St. Joseph’s in Rutland, Vt., defeated the University of Maine-Machias in the consolation game 58-54.

In the championship game, Jeff Shakoor chipped in with 17 points for the Braves, now 5-0. Husson’s Brown was named to the All-Tourney team and Alley received MVP honors.

Also named to the All-Tourney team were: Simon Mitchell and Shawn Manter, UMPI; Dennis Shelton, College of St. Joe’s; Chris Kovaks, UMM.

Manter paced 1-1 UMPI with 19 points while Mitchell and Bernard Grenway each added 14.

In the consolation contest, Shelton scored 22 points for the Saints, now 1-1. Jim Dowlearn added 11 and Tom Davis netted 10.

For 0-3 UMM, Ralph Hirtle scored 20 points and P.J. Bristol put in 10.

At Unity, Dale Black poured in 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Rams past the University of Maine-Augusta Rebels in the final of the Unity College Invitational Saturday.

Eastern Maine Technical College of Bangor defeated the University of Maine-Fort Kent in the consolation game 78-67.

Jason Boucher chipped in with 27 points and eight assists for 3-1 Unity. Tony Therrien added 16 points and 12 rebounds while Matt Bennett netted 13 points.

For 1-1 UMA, Greg Chesley and Scott Bessey each scored 16 points.

Unity’s Black and Therrien were named to the All-Tourney team along with UMA’s Chesley. UMFK’s Lorne Guy and EMTC’s Jim Brichetto also selected.

At Gorham, Statyba-Lithuania erased a three-point halftime defecit as they defeated the Huskies here Saturday.

Rolandas Cesna led the Lithuanians with 16 points. Darijus Taralla and Dainius Adomaitis each netted 14 points.

Mike Fennessy led the Huskies with 23 points while Will Robinson added 10.
