ELLSWORTH — The director of The Grand theater called a recent fund-raising event a success Wednesday.
George Wojtasik said the “Day for The Grand” promotion held last Sunday raised $3,500 to offset the theater’s operating costs. He and organizer Ken Scweikert of the sponsoring Downtown Merchant’s Association had hoped to raise between $3,000 and $4,000.
Nearly 50 downtown businesses participated either by donating 10 percent of their gross sales to The Grand, or by outright cash donations. The promotion also featured a full day of free entertainment.
The money will supplement The Grand’s membership drive income and programming revenues, and is just enough to balance the facility’s 1992 budget, Wojtasik said.
A haunted theater is being set up for Halloween weekend, and a local production of the musical “Oklahoma” will begin Nov. 6 and play for two weekends.
