BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

This letter is written to express appreciation for an example of honesty, one of renewing faith in mankind, and expressing thanks to some Maine people. The past three weeks I toured Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont while attending two Elderhostels in the area.

Monday noon, June 22, I stopped to have lobster just outside of Acadia National Park on my way through Bangor to Bethel. Pictures were taken of the lobster and then I left my camera on the table. Upon reaching Bethel about 6 p.m. I realized I had no camera. This camera was a good one but more importantly, it had been a gift to my wife before she passed away a year ago. Also, pictures of Orr’s Island, Acadia, and some 30 other wonderful Maine shots were on the roll of film in the camera.

Tuesday, June 23, I called the Bangor Police Department and they transferred the call to the Sheriff’s Office. In turn I was transferred by them to talk with Lunt’s Gateway Lobster Pound for help in indentifying which place I might have stopped for lunch. When I asked if a camera was found, the answer was: “Sure did! What do you want us to do with it?”

They sent it to the Elderhostel in St. Johnsbury, Vt. I arrived on Sunday, June 28 and it was there. They didn’t indicate the cost of shipping, their time involved, or any information on their cost of getting the camera to me. What great people! What joy and deep appreciation they brought to me! I was impressed with your great state but have a new and wonderful appreciation for your people.

Today, our news has so much about the problems of the world and people. I had to share with you and hopefully others that things in Maine are still holding to the wonderful values of treating others like you would like to be treated. I was. Eugene L. Dorr Glendale, Ariz.
