Group installs new park bench

ELLSWORTH — A new park bench was the first step taken by the newly formed Friends of Union River to improve the facilities at Ellsworth Harbor.

According to Hugh Goodwin, the city’s harbormaster and one of the group’s volunteers, the wooden bench secured on a cement form was made possible through a $178 donation from Bangor Savings Bank.

Goodwin said the city dock and harbor area of Union River is one of the city’s hidden treasures. Friends of Union River was formed in the spring through the efforts of interested citizens and the city harbor commissioners to help preserve the natural beauty of the area.

Specific goals of the group are to maintain and improve harbor facilities, to provide greater public access, to safeguard water quality, to protect on-shore fisheries, to improve boating safety, and to promote harbor resources to residents and visitors.

The group welcomes donations from individuals and businesses. They may be sent to Friends of Union River, in care of Harbormaster, Ellsworth 04605. More information on the group may be obtained by calling Goodwin at 667-8685.
