Lisbon’s Gamrat 1-hits MCI en route to crown

ORONO – It came down to one thing: doing what you set out to do. Lisbon did, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield didn’t and, as a result, Lisbon won its third state Class B softball title here Saturday, 6-1.

Lisbon pitcher Andrea Gamrat had one thing in mind: to pitch a complete game. She did, firing a one-hitter while striking out five and walking seven.

MCI coach Julie Treadwell expected her team to hit well, as it had in the past

But the Huskies, with the exception of Nicole Bourget’s line-drive single in the fifth inning, didn’t hit at all, and dropped its second state title in two years to Char Bennett’s Lisbon Greyhounds.

Lisbon ended its championship season with a 16-2 record; MCI finished at 18-2.

“I knew I had to pitch my best or I would be pulled,” Gamrat said following the game. “That’s what coach had been doing. I wanted to get this game. I wanted the complete game.” Gamrat finished 8-1.

She admitted a little surprise at the one-hitter, since she had expected much more from the MCI batters, whom she had heard were very good. “I’m pleased with the championship,” she said, “because the team played well.”

Behind the pitcher, the defense made only one error which helped set up MCI’s only run.

MCI right fielder Kim Fotter singled to right center and slid safely into first.

Lisbon right fielder Barbie Bowie picked up the ball and threw to her twin, Laurie Bowie, who missed it, and Fotter went to second on the error. She moved to third on a 6-3 ground out by Courtney Barnes, and came home on a passed ball.

“I’m glad we made it this far,” Fotter said, “but things just didn’t go our way today. It was a very good game, if it weren’t for the weather.”

The weather was a factor, as intermittent rain showers turned to downpours in the run-laden fifth inning. While it poured, Lisbon scored three runs before, and one after, a 10-minute rain delay.

Losing pitcher Becky Vaughn gave up 10 hits, but also struck out 11 and walked just five. She was in the circle during the worst of the rain, and sat out the 10-minute delay.

In the third inning, left field leadoff hitter Bobbi Filmore singled up the middle, advanced on a passed ball, and stole third.

Filmore came home on second baseman Rebecca Mynahan’s single. Mynahan then stole second. After shortstop Katie Gamache flew out to Vaughn, third baseman Bobbi Freve singled Mynahan home for the winning run.

Gamrat was thrown out 1-3 and Bourget went down swinging to end the inning.

Mynahan opened the infamous fifth with a walk, and went to second on a Katie Gamache sacrifice bunt. As the clouds increased and the rain gear came out, Freve singled, Mynahan went to third, and Freve to second on an overthrow at third, an error which plated Mynahan.

Gamrat singled off a 3-2 pitch with Freve going to third. Gamrat then stole second and Nicole Bourget came to bat.

Then the heavens opened and the umpires called time.

Restarting after the delay, Bourget singled and drove in Freve, then Bourget went to second and Gamrat to third on the throw to the plate. Laurie Bowie flew to second, and designated hitter Christy Earl singled in Gamrat and Bourget on another full-count pitch. Earl advanced to second on the throw to the plate, but Barbie Bowie flew to third to retire the side.

“We had a good team this year. I’m not surprised,” Bennett said when asked to comment on her No. 3 Western Maine team taking the state title.

“I think we could have come in eighth and still won it. Our defense is very good, and I think the two losses we had during the season really helped us.”

Before those regular-season losses, Lisbon had won 49 straight league games. “We were a bit overconfident then,” Bennett said. “That settled us down.”
