WELLINGTON — Children attending the one-room Wellington School have been awarded a $1,000 Partners in Philanthropy grant from the Maine Community Foundation to donate to a non-profit organization of their choice.
The first- through fourth-grade pupils have been assessing the needs in Wellington before determining where to distribute the funds. They have visited the Grange and heard proposals on college scholarships, a clothing-food bank, and on starting an arboretum. The project gives young people complete control over decisions on how funds will be distributed and encourages them to become involved in projects.
The group is one of 10 in the state selected to participate. Donna Bailey-Miller of Human Development Associates is the MCF liaison and consultant, and Martha Young of Project Whole Child is coordinator. Mark Arthers, Wellington’s teacher, has included this experience in the social studies curriculum.
The Wellington School is part of SAD 4 in Piscataquis County.
