MACHIAS — The challenges facing managers in today’s workplace is the subject of a daylong seminar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 15 in Portside, Kimball Hall, at the University of Maine at Machias. Designed for managers of small and large businesses, the seminar will feature a no-nonsense approach for getting to the heart of workplace challenges.

This employee relations seminar, sponsored by UMM’s Office of Special Programs, is another in an eight-part series for managers and supervisors. The series is planned to bring quality professional skills development programs Down East for the benefit of local businesses, banks, retail, social service, tourist, health care, and government offices and agencies.

Among the topics to be covered are employment practices such as interviewing, hiring and evaluating; personnel practices including orientation, training and staff development; and the technical demands of record keeping, EEO regulations and employee aspects of affirmative action.

The presenter for this seminar is Margaret Beckman, personnel manager for the Training and Development Corp., Bucksport.

Beckman is a frequent presenter for the University of Maine certificate programs on employee development and human resource management topics. She will provide a thorough and enjoyable look at the challenges of employee relations.
