Symrna voters OK 1992 town budget

SMYRNA — Residents of Smyrna approved an annual budget of more than $109,000 during their annual town meeting held recently.

During municipal elections held prior to the meeting, Perry Lilley was re-elected to the Board of Selectmen with 77 votes. He defeated former selectman John Kingman who received 33 votes.

Kevin Brannen also was re-elected to a three-year term on that board. He ran unopposed, by two write-in candidates received a total of 17 votes in that race.

Roy Brisley was elected to a five-year term on the Planning Board, and Marguerite Lawlor was elected to complete the term of Darrell Robertson on that board.

Voters also authorized selectmen to allow the old Roosevelt School to be torn down. The bell from the school will be retained by the town and will be placed in a monument on the site at future date.

Some residents had wanted the 80-year-old structure saved, possibly for use as a recreation center or library.

“It is sad to think that non-natives want this historical site razed,” wrote Kingman in a recent letter to the NEWS. “It will be a blow to the history of (the) town once it is gone … .”

Articles approved by voters included the following: administration, $27,000; general assistance, $1,260; fire protection, $5,000; ambulance protection, $6,847; landfill, $6,000; Southern Aroostook Solid Waste Disposal District, $6,866; landfill closure, $5,741; winter roads, including Department of Transportation funds, $30,000; cemetery, including expansion funds, $4,500; recreation accounts, $2,475; street lights, $1,600; and non-municipal agencies, $2,641.
