UM indoor track team honors record-setters at team banquet

ORONO – The University of Maine men’s and women’s indoor track teams set three school records during their recently completed seasons.

The men’s team finished second at the Eastern Championships in Kingston, R.I., and the women finished ninth at the New England Championships earlier this month in their season-ending competitions.

The record-setters were honored at a team dinner Wednesday night at Wells Commons.

First-year student Charla Harrie of Sanford ran a time of 2 minutes, 35.77 seconds in the 1,000-yard run at the New Englands to finish second and set a school mark in the event.

Jeff Young of Windham set a school record in the men’s 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:27.61 at the North Atlantic Conference championships in Delaware. He finished third in the event at that meet.

The other school record was set by UMaine’s distance medley relay team. The medley consists of a 1,200-meter run, followed by runs of 400 and 800 meters, and finally a mile run.

The team finished third at the New Englands with a time of 10:08.64, breaking a seven-year-old school mark (10:09.2). Team members were Young (1,200), Mike Proctor of Bridgton (400), Sanford’s Jamie Lachance (800), and Sean Tynan of Foxboro, Mass. (mile).
