Texas College races past Eastern Maine Tech 146-67

DALLAS – Texas College showed why it was rated No. 1 in the National Small College Basketball Tournament by blasting Eastern Maine Technical College of Bangor 146-67 in a second-round game at Paul Quinn College here Tuesday night.

The Texans, pressing all over the court, ran to a 51-15 lead and then saw their margin balloon to 73-27 at the half.

The winners were led by Small College All-American pick James Hutton with 34 points as he hit 14 of 20 field-goal attempts. W.T. Garrett added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Texas squad, while Charles Mann had a game-high 12 rebounds and 11 points and James Smith scored 12 points as eight players scored in double figures.

For EMTC, now 15-9, Jimmy Card, also an All-American, and Billy Ownes had 18 points each and Owens pulled down 11 rebounds. The Texans outrebounded the Maine club 66-35 in the contest.

Eastern Maine Tech will now move to the losers bracket and will face Michigan Christian College in a 5 p.m. game Thursday in the double-elimination event. Texas College advanced to a 7 p.m. Thursday meeting with Detroit-Jordan College.
