McKernan to tape opening to Quoddy Loop promotion

CALAIS — Gov. John R. McKernan Jr. has agreed to tape the introduction to a video that will promote the Quoddy Bay area.

Last month, Keith Guttormsen, executive director of the Calais Area Chamber of Commerce and vice chairman of the Quoddy Bay Fundy Isles Tourism Development Corp., announced that he had invited McKernan and New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna to tape the introduction to a video tape on the Quoddy Loop. The Quoddy Loop is a scenic tour of coastal Washington County and Charlotte County, New Brunswick, that has been publicized to promote tourism in the area.

Guttormsen said he believed an invitation from the governor and the premier would help attract more visitors to the area and thereby stimulate revenues through tourism.

The director said that last week, he received a phone call from Nathaniel H. Bowditch, of the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development, who confirmed that the governor would tape the introduction.

“He said the next time the governor is in Bangor he would stop in at WLBZ, Channel 2, in Bangor and record the introduction,” he said.

Guttormsen said he had not yet heard from the premier who recently returned from vacation, but he said he hoped the premier also would agree to participate.

The executive director said he was pleased with the governor’s response. “A lot of things you can get if you just ask.” he said.
