2 winners in Megabucks

CONCORD, N.H. — The Tri-State Megabucks mania that swept through northern New England last week as the jackpot grew to a record $16.4 million is over.

Two tickets, bought in Maine and Vermont, contained the six winning numbers in Saturday. Each of the winners will get $8.2 million, or $410,000 a year for 20 years.

The tickets were sold at the Shaw’s supermarket in the Pine Tree Mall in Portland and at Ken’s Country Store in Wilder, Vt. The winners have not been identified.

There were 390 people who had five correct numbers and won $1,000 each. Overall, more than 198,000 people matched three, four or five numbers and won about $1.2 million in cash and tickets.

A record 5,084,445 tickets were sold for the drawing and a jackpot that was almost $7 million more than the previous record of $9.66 million.

The jackpot had gone 12 drawings without a winner.

Lottery officials said tickets were selling at about 4,000 a minute in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont on Saturday. Lines formed at many lottery machines since Wednesday’s drawing, with many buying more than just a couple tickets.

Charles Kummel of Rindge and 11 co-workers had a ticket that matched five of the six winning numbers drawn Wednesday and won $1,000. They didn’t take the money and run. Instead, they bought 1,000 tickets for Saturday’s drawing.

First Lady Barbara Bush and Republican presidential challenger Patrick Buchanan also held tickets for the record drawing. A Keene resident gave Mrs. Bush a ticket when she was in New Hampshire last week, and Buchanan bought one Friday.

The six correct numbers were: 3, 8, 10, 18, 26, 28.
