WATERVILLE — An anonymous donor has presented a record $1.1 million to Colby College for a fully-endowed professorship, the college announced Thursday.

The gift — the largest ever received by Colby from a living person — requires the college to raise funds to endow four additional chairs by the year 2000.

Colby President William R. Cotter appointed G. Calvin Mackenzie, distinguished presidential professor of American government, as the first holder of the new chair.
