Questions about arm strength anger Walsh

NEW ORLEANS – Steve Walsh says there are enough questions about his arm strength without the New Orleans Saints coaching staff adding to the speculation.

Against Atlanta last month, Walsh faked an injury to his left pinkie and Mike Buck came in to throw a 63-yard completion on a flea-flicker.

Against Dallas on Sunday, Buck came in on a straight substitution to throw a “Hail Mary” from 60 yards out as the first half ended. It was intercepted.

After the Atlanta game, coach Jim Mora said he thought Walsh was hurt and had to leave the game. He said there was no doubt Walsh could make the 60-yard throw as well as Buck.

But Monday, he said he sent Buck into the game “because he has the ability to throw the ball farther than Steve.”

“A stronger arm. That’s the kind of play where you need the strongest arm you can get,” Mora said.

Walsh said he doesn’t appreciate having his arm strength impugned.

“I can throw that,” Walsh said. “Yeah, it bothers me.”

“You’d have to talk to (offensive coordinator) Carl Smith about that, what he’s doing about that,” he said. “Yeah, it bothers me, but I can do that, too. I can throw it down there and throw a completion just as well as throwing an interception or an incompletion.”
