WATERVILLE — Stephen Murray, an expert on Gothic architecture, will lecture and present his film at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in Given Auditorium at Colby College.
A professor of art history and director of graduate studies at Columbia University, Murray is a noted authority on cathedral architecture. At Colby, he will introduce and explain his 1988 film “Architecture of Transcendence: Beauvais Cathedral” which will be shown publicly for the first time in Maine.
Murray, the author of several books and writings, received his undergraduate degree from Oxford University and his doctorate from the Courtauld Institute of Art of the University of London. Before moving to Columbia University, Murray taught at Indiana University where he was chairman of the fine arts department and director of the school of fine arts.
Murray’s visit is sponsored by the Colby Humanities Grants Committee, the Art Department, the Religion Department and the All-College Lecture Fund.
