Bangor High

The English and business education departments are offering computer lab instruction to certain English classes. Students are learning keyboarding and computer terminology. They also will use the lab for English writing assignments. The lab is used to review English grammar, word processing and communication skills. Teachers involved are Deanna Jones, Drew Milliken, Juanita Drisko, Jan Rideout and Virginia Burr Sucy.

The National Merit Corp. has named the following students as semifinalists: Kevin Foss, Jennifer Peithman, Laurie Rosenthal, Hans Scwartz, Jessica Sexton and Sarah Shubert. Commended Scholars were Jeff Bowden, Amanda Godsoe, Sarah Jordan, Thomas Lingley, Jennifer Martini, Andrew Richards and Emily Russell.

Class officers were elected Sept. 20. Junior class officers are Scott Butterfield, president; Pat Masters, vice president; Mary Estey, secretary; Katie McPherson, treasurer. Sophomore officers are Allyson Port, president; Jamie Black, vice president; Allison Willigar, secretary; Andrea Bassi, treasurer. Freshman officers are Nate Pusey, president; Jill Gardner, vice president; Sara Parker, secretary; Brooks Deering, treasurer.

The orchestra will go to elementary schools on Thursday, Sept. 26, to interest fourth-grade pupils in musical instruments.

Bangor Christian

The first parent-teacher conference of the year will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3. The school anticipates a large turnout.

PSAT testing will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, for juniors and a few select sophomores.

The sophomore class will hold a rockathon Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26. The class is attempting to line up sponsers and is looking forward to a successful fund-raiser. — Bill Canning, Marty Hughes

Brewer High

Future Business Leaders of America officers for the new school year have been elected: president, Paula Edgecomb; program chair, Andy Bladen; vice president, Val Whitmore; secretary, Tricia Chubbuck; treasurer, Cherie Bourne; fund-raising chairs, Leslie Hopkins and Carrie Gray. The first project involves making ghost pops for the annual sale during Halloween week. Plans are being made to visit local colleges as well as businesses.

On Friday, Sept. 13, the sophomore class held an activities night to welcome the freshmen to Brewer High School. The night was filled with dancing, games, volleyball, basketball and video-filming. Teachers as well as students enjoyed the fun and excitement.

The Student Council has held its first two meetings. Events scheduled for the near future are the magazine drive, freshman class elections, and a regional conference to be held Oct. 15 at Calais Regional High School. The officers are: president, Shane Sargent; vice president, Jen Allen; secretary, Shelby Largay; assisstant secretary, Jill Kiah; and treasurer, Heather Baker. — Julie Gray

Brewer Middle School

We have about 25 new students. Most are from the Brewer area and some are from New Hampshire and Connecticutt.

We have a few new teachers because of the increase in the student population. In the sixth grade the new teacher is Jacqueline Drummey. Susan Richard, formerly the foreign language teacher, is now a seventh grade core teacher. Also new to the seventh grade is Paul Paulson, math teacher. Frank Page has come back to teach science after taking a year off.

Channel 1 has been introduced to BMS. Channel 1 is a news program directed to teen-age viewers. Some popular shows such as “Beverly Hills 90210” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” have been reviewed on Channel 1.

The Student Council recently held elections in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The new members include Laura Harburger, Matt Bills, Lindsay Harriman, Jennifer Bond, Amanda Kersey and Trena Penney from the sixth grade and Amanda Swett and John Allen from the seventh grade. The new eighth grade members are Aaron Harburger and Chris Brown.

BMS now recycles tin cans, paper and cardboard boxes. We also have a recycling committee to run these programs. The president is David Murphy. New members include sixth graders Jaime Langtagne and Nick King; new seventh grade members Corey Ferguson and Christina Goodwin; and eighth-graders Jessica Getchell and Jenny Sargent. — Laurie Egan, Katie Johnson

Center Drive

Registration for the Science Club and Math Team have started. The Science Club was started last year for students who are concerned about the Earth and its atmosphere. The Math Team competes against other schools’ teams in northern and central Maine. — Chris Mockler, Matt Ring

Fifth Street

In observance of Constitution Week, students in Gary Capehart’s class will create a small protest-support sign as an expression of their First Amendment rights. Daily announcements also include a student interpretation of the Constitution.

Students Nick Carlisle and Jennifer Hogkins are winners in the Crayola Dreamakers Art Contest. Their work is being displayed at Columbia University and will tour the United States as part of a permanent collection to be used for instructional purposes.

With all of the upheaval in the Soviet Union creating a great deal of interest in that part of the world, some students in Jennifer Wellington’s sixth-grade class had an opportunity to find out a bit about life there. Sixth-grade teacher Paula McAfee talked with them about her trip to Russia last April and showed them some of her souvenirs.

All home games for the Fifth Street girls soccer teams will be played at the Mary Snow School field. Those wanting to attend should enter the school parking lot from Essex Street.

Garland Street

The show choir is designed for more experienced singers at our school. This year there are 18 members: Kence Anderson, Mark Manowski, Nicole Dayton, Jamie Guevara, Julie Kirstein, Taryn McNichol, Patti Paterson, Dan Acheson, Emily Kornfield, Britta Strong, Meredith Theeman, Peter Holman, Katwren Anderson, Kyla Trundy, Dana Ryder, Jennifer Hill-Snyder, Kellie Mador and Lisa Sutcliffe. Heidi Anderson is the director. A vocal ensemble is also available for others wanting to participate.

The Student Council officers for this year are: president, Kence Anderson; vice president, Maria-Alexis Karris; secretary, Wanthani Briggs; corresponding secretary, Katie Clark; treasurer, Gavin McCarthy. Elections for classroom representatives and alternates are being held this week.

The annual Garland Street open house will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25. Eastside Bakers will serve refreshments in the auditorium. Students and their parents are welcome. Teachers will be in their classrooms, and student materials will be displayed.

Garland Street Middle School is participating in the Penobscot Valley Middle School Cross Country League. This is the second year for the extracurricular sport. More than 30 students have chosen to participate. The coach is Terry Deane. There will be seven meets this season. A home meet will be held at Bangor High School on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Tryouts have been held for the boys and girls soccer teams. Shelly Antoine is the coach for the girls team. David Manowski is the boys coach. Garland Street faces Hampden on Tuesday and Brewer on Friday at home. Coach Tim Baude is working with other boys and girls wanting to participate in the B team program.

John Bapst

Todd Carr and a small group from the yearbook staff attended a recent daylong seminar at the Hilton in Bangor. The seminar gave the staff lots of new and exciting ideas for this year’s Bapstonian.

A group of students went with Michael Schaab to the University of Maine to attend a workshop on engineering. The workshop is one in a series intended to help high school students select a college major. Students viewed advanced technology exhibits on robotic, laser, radar, satellite, aerodynamic and waste management.

Key Club members have the chance to tour the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute in Boston. While in Boston they can raise money for the institute by participating in a walkathon on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Class elections were held Sept. 13. Freshman class officers are president, Charley Martin; vice president-secretary, Nicole Berry; treasurer, Nicki Gogan. Representing the sophomore class are president, Katie Roy; vice president-secretary, Tracy Riley; and treasurer, Kim Patenaude. Junior class officers are president, Kirstie Roy; vice president-secretary, Katie Timmins; and treasurer, Amy Davis. The senior class is led by president; Megan McNichol; vice president-secretary, Kim Sekera; and treasurer, Ted Curtis. Ryan McDonald, Clint Siegel, Barbara Foster and Amanda Curtis are the senators for the senior class.

Old Town High

The debate team has begun preparing for the new year. The team is reinstating policy debate after many years due to the large number of new members.

The Peer Helpers group wrote letters to support a 6-year-old girl with AIDS. The Peer Helpers will work with chemical health awareness in the Old Town School District during October.

The Teen Theatre Group has begun developing skits for a performance in Searsport in November.

Seniors wanting to take the SAT test on Saturday, Nov. 2, should get an application from the guidance office by Friday, Sept. 27. — Jennifer Varney
