Stearns, Bucksport, MCI, Gardiner, MB, Waterville win

The Stearns Minutemen battled to a 20-14 overtime win over Mount Desert Island and Bucksport rolled past Belfast 27-0 to highlight high school football action Friday night.

In other games, Lawrence of Fairfield downed Bangor 36-0, Old Town topped Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 38-14, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield shut out Messalonskee of Oakland 42-8, Gardiner cruised past Brunswick 42-6, Mt. Blue of Farmington stopped Skowhegan 26-21, and Waterville beat Oxford Hills of South Paris 27-7.

Stearns 20, MDI 14 (OT)

At Millinocket, the host Minutemen drove 94 yards to score the tying touchdown, then scored on Kevin Legassey’s eight-yard run in overtime to nip the Trojans.

The Minutemen scored on their third play of the OT after MDI’s Mike Clark missed a 26-yard field goal.

Stearns outgained MDI 271-44 on the ground, but had trouble punching it in. MDI struck first on a 35-yard pass from Mike Clark to Chris Jeffers, but Stearns answered on a 15-yard scoring run by Lateef O’Connor (123 yards).

Leading 8-6, the Trojans scored after a 32-yard interception return by Matt Janes. Tom James capped the drive with a six-yard run. Stearns came back with its long drive, which O’Connor capped with a 15-yard run.

Bucksport 27, Belfast 0

At Belfast, Paul Urquhart rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to lead the Bucksport Golden Bucks to the victory.

For the 1-1 Bucks, Arthur Maguire rushed for a touchdown and 82 yards on 17 carries. Bubba Shorey also rushed for a 2-yard TD.

Noseguard Todd Orcutt had 5 tackles, 5 assists, and one quarterback sack. Linebacker Urquhart had 4 tackles, 6 assists, and a sack. Brian Hurd made 6 tackles.

Bucksport rolled up 280 rushing yards.

Sophomore middle linebacker Matt Varney made 10 unassisted tackles to lead the defensive effort for the 0-2 Lions.

At Oakland, Jon DeSisto and Chuck Norris rushed for two touchdowns each to spark the Huskies to their first win.

DeSisto scored on runs of 16 and 20 yards, while Nrros had TD runs of nine and 21 yards for 1-1 MCI. Aaron Cianchette contributed a five-yard scoring run and John Stockbridge romped in from 21 yards out.

For the 0-2 Eagles, Matt Hanbrick had a three-yard touchdown run.

At Gardiner, Chris Whalen scored two touchdowns and rushed for 94 yards on 10 carries to help lead the Gardiner Tigers to the victory over Brunswick.

For the 2-0 Tigers, quarterback Mark Ladner rushed for a touchdown and threw a 54-yard scoring strike to Travis Jordan to pace the offense. Nate Whalen rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Mike Wilkerson rushed for a fourth-quarter TD to pace the 0-2 Dragons.

Waterville 27, Oxford Hills 7

At South Paris, Mike Brown ran for first-half touchdowns of 9 and 5 yards to help the Panthers defeat the host Vikings.

Jon Hewey scored on a 2-yard run for the Vikings in the third quarter to cut the Panthers lead to 14-7, but Waterville came back with two fourth-quarter TDs to put the game away. Kevin Scott caught a 7-yard TD pass from Jason Jabar and Mike Hamel scored on a 2-yard rush.

Waterville rolled up 251 rushing yards on 44 carries, compared to the Vikings 71 yards on 29 carries. Jabar completed 11 of 23 passes for 140 yards.

Waterville is now 2-0 and OH is 0-2.

At Skowhegan, Jonah Tyler led the Mt. Blue Cougars of Farmington to victory with two touchdown receptions, one in the come-from-behind fourth quarter.

For the 2-0 Cougars, Tyler finished with 97 yards on four catches and 75 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Mark Chabot completed six of 10 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns.

Jarrod True carried the ball for 180 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries for the 0-2 Indians.
