Milo group leaves for Washington

MILO — Ten members of Penquis Valley High School’s Junior Class left Sunday afternoon for a weeklong governmental studies program in Washington, accompanied by Russell Carey, Close-Up Foundation coordinator for the school.

The 10 students are Kriston Corcoran and Jennifer Rolfe, Brownville Junction; Betty Jean Dow, Atkinson; Timothy Gallagher, Jessica Russell and Mary Valente, Milo; and Daniel Gerrish, Shauna Heath, Jeffrey Ladd and Lori Green, Brownville.

They have worked for the past five months earning funds toward the trip. Total cost for the trip was $975 a person. Carey said the group raised about $7,500, leaving little that each student had to pay out of pocket.

Carey said the community supported the students, and donations were received from several groups and businesses.

The students will have a “jam-packed schedule from arrival time Sunday until departure on Saturday morning,” Carey said.

There will be workshops, lectures, meetings with government officials, tours of Washington, special meetings, and a dinner theater.

Other students attending the Close-Up Conference will be Presque Isle High School, Stearns of Millinocket, Brewer High School and Limestone High School.
