Young author reads story to SAD 28 board

CAMDEN — The SAD 28 school board comgratulated teacher Faith Vautour and student Caitlin Fitzgerald at their meeting Tuesday night.

Vautour was applauded for winning a grant for individual studies. She will be required to read 20 books and will spend 40 hours per week on the project.

Fitzgerald, 7, penned a children’s story, “Friends Stick Together,” which won a Young Author’s Contest.

The contest awarded 100 prizes among 18,000 contestants. Fitzgerald was the only winner in Maine.

Fitzgerald read her story for a totally charmed school board Tuesday night.

Andy Rheault of the Building and Grounds Committee reported that 8.7 acres of land next to the Rockport Elementary School is available for sale. Rheault warned the board that the land has “serious problems” with swampiness.

The board approved a new class size policy.

An AIDS survey was approved for all students at Camden-Rockport High School. The survey will be voluntary and anonymous. Rockport board member David Farley said the survey is a good idea, as long as there are no changes in the approved format.

The board approved a storage-shed project for the high school and congratulated Jessie Thompson for volunteer work.

A two-year unpaid personnel leave for teacher Michael Drons to teach in Turkey was approved by the board.

Don’t expect a budget document from SAD 28 in the mail. The board reported that the budget explanation will not be mailed this year, but will be available at town offices and other locations.

Farley said the people who bother to pick up the explanation will be more likely to read it.
