AIDS death toll 100,000 in U.S.

ATLANTA — The death toll from AIDS in the United States has topped 100,000, with nearly a third dying just last year, and is escalating, federal health officials said Thursday.

Out of 161,073 AIDS cases reported in this country since June 1981, 100,777 people had died as of the end of December, the Centers for Disease Control said, citing new statistics.

CDC researchers project that, in the next three years, as many as 215,000 more Americans will die of AIDS.
