BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

There are so many solutions in the wind to the gulf crisis, it’s hard to know what would be most effective. Ideas run the gamut of the “easy,” kick-’em-in-the-A solution that would guarantee thousands of lost lives on both sides, all the way to another “easy” solution of turning our backs and coming home.

The United Nations has spoken. Sanctions are in place and there’s a deadline drawn in the sands of time.

What’s glaringly missing, however, is any talk about a long-term solution. Like it or not, we’ve been heavily involved in the Middle East for years, because one of our major allies, Israel, continues to have secruity problems.

We’re no different in this country than are humans anywhere: We have a headache, we take a pill, rather than also looking for the cause.

Why not convene an international meeting of Christains, Jews, and Moslems that would look at finding long-term solutions to the problems of the region rather than trying to deal only with current symptoms.

This international meeting should address all the Middle East problems and concerns and not just the current Kuwaiti standoff.

Today’s crisis gives this country and the world a chance to see that the politics of war must be replaced by the politics of peace, which are more concerned with saving our earth and helping its people. John Greenman Old Town
