New low in election process

It is of some consolation to learn that your readers are as outraged as I am over the deceitful process that led to the re-election of Gov. McKernan. His willingness to prostitute himself by putting politics before principles marks a new low in the Maine election process.

To help us avoid a repeat of this in the future and to serve notice on others who would lie and deceive in order to be elected, let’s get our legislators to enact the following laws:

(1) A Truth in Campaigning Act. The law would be similar to that which regulates the advertising industry. It should have clear enforcement procedures and provide for a public hearing by a body of peers. Penalties for breaching the public trust could range from reprimand to public censure to removal from office.

(2) An act to Recall Elected Officials. This act would provide for the recall of an elected official through a petition calling for a special referendum. The petition would require the signatures of a set percentage of the number of people who voted in the last election. The recall referendum would take place immediately…. Peter T. Seely Brunswick
