Lubec man killed in crash

TOWNSHIP 10 — Thomas K. Fountain, 49, of Lubec, was killed Friday when the car he was driving left Route 182 on Cathance Hill in Township 10, striking several trees and a large rock.

According to state police, Fountain, who was driving a 1990 Plymouth Sundance, was eastbound on Route 182 at about 4:25 p.m. Friday when he “lost control on a sharp rise.”

Police said Fountain failed to negotiate a hairpin turn near Cathance Hill and was thrown from the vehicle as it struck the trees and rock.

The accident was first reported to state police in Orono, who then dispatched the Cherryfield Ambulance Service to the scene. Authorities said the ambulance crew arrived to find Fountain already dead.

Troopers Thomas Perkins and Joseph Tibbetts from Troop J in East Machias, who also were dispatched to the scene, are continuing their investigation. State police reported Sunday that it was not known whether speed or other factors were involved in the accident.
