UM student wins $1,000 scholarship

ORONO — Andrew J. Laffely of Brunswick, an Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet at the University of Maine, has won the NYC Society of American Military Engineers Name Scholarship of $1,000.

The scholarship honors superior engineering students pursuing military careers and was presented to Laffely at an ROTC leadership class.

Laffely finished in the top 10 percent of his field training camp and has maintained a B average as a junior electrical engineering major, has received numerous honors as a cadet and been active in Arnold Air Society community service projects.

He is the son of Leon and Nancy Laffely of Brunswick and graduated from Brunswick High School in June 1988. He is scheduled to enter the Air Force in 1992 as an electrical engineer.
