Coalition urges support of shelters for homeless

Those who feel the spirit of giving to people who are without a safe and warm home this holiday season are encouraged to give to their community’s shelter for the homeless. The Maine Coalition for the Homeless urges Maine residents to remember the needy population now and during the coming year.

“The holiday season is a perfect time to remind everyone that there are a number of people in our state who go without a place to call home every night,” said Don Gean, president of the Maine Coalition for the Homeless and executive director of York County Shelters.

“Especially during the cold winter months, our shelters are usually overflowing. We would like to encourage folks to contribute time and support to a local soup kitchen or shelter,” Gean added.

The Greater Bangor Area Shelter has served 712 guests in the past year. Volunteer support and cash donations are always needed. For more information about other items needed, contact Susan Brainerd at the Greater Bangor Area Shelter, 26 Cedar St., Box 1754, Bangor 04401, or telephone 947-0092.

There is also a shelter for the homeless in Presque Isle. Temporary Shelter for the Homeless Inc. can be reached at Box 1753, Presque Isle 04769. The executive director is Goldie Whitmore, who can be reached at 764-4125. The Presque Isle shelter had served 236 guests by the end of November, and it expects to have served 250 by the end of the year.

People who would like to support the Maine Coalition for the Homeless are encouraged to become members. For more information, call 207-324-1137 or write Box 20, Alfred 04002.
