Geo-Ecology Club plans lecture series

PRESQUE ISLE — Geo-ecology is a broad topic, covering almost everything relating to the earth sciences.

In the interest of providing education offerings to the community, the members of the Geo-Ecology Club of the University of Maine at Presque Isle will sponsor a lecture series on earth science subjects.

The next guest lecturer will be Renee Keele, outdoor education coordinator of the Francis Malcolm Science Institute in Easton. The title of her talk, to be given at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in Folsom 105, at UMPI, is “Having Fun with Science: Sparking Children’s Imaginations.”

Elementary education teachers and home schoolers should find Keele’s talk “invigorating” and “inspiring,” university officals said. Keele is described as an “energetic and enthusiastic believer in making science fun and accessible for children.”

Future lecture topics will include composting and mine reclamation.

The club plans to hold a lecture a month, through April. The lectures are free and open to the public, with refreshments provided.

More information about the club and the lectures is available from Dr. Kevin McCartney, assistant professor of geology at UMPI.
