Greenville to light Christmas tree as prelude to festive holiday fare

GREENVILLE — The Christmas season in Greenville promises to be fun-filled as a variety of activities are planned including a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a treasure hunt and sleigh rides.

Donna Moreland, executive director of the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce, said a Christmas tree lighting ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the intersection of Main Street and Pritham Avenue. This kicks off a campaign to promote community Christmas spirit and to encourage people to shop locally.

The Community Christmas project is a joint effort by the chamber, businesses, residents and town government. Moreland said an anonymous donor presented about $100 worth of Christmas lights for the community tree. In addition, local residents have donated lights. The Community Choir will sing carols during the ceremony, and Everett Parker, president of the chamber, will address the crowd. Perry Wortman, honorary member of the chamber, will light the tree, according to Moreland.

Moreland said a retail treasure hunt is planned in the community on Dec. 8. Families are encouraged to stop at the chamber office to pick up a clue which will lead them to a business where they will pick up a subsequent clue for the treasure hunt. When the family completes the hunt and has the correct answers, they will bring the completed form back to the chamber office to be entered into a drawing for gift certificates ranging from $5 to $25, donated by the business community.

Santa Claus will arrive Dec. 9 and will participate in a parade to the American Legion Hall. There, Santa will visit with the children.

On Dec. 15, judging for the Christmas decoration contest will be held. There will be two categories in the contest — business and private home decorations. A cup will be presented to the business that is selected. The cup, donated by Robin and Gray Morrison in honor of all veterans, will be moved each year to a new winner in the competition. There will also be a plaque in the chamber office that will list the names of the business winners. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in the private home categories. Residents are encouraged to view the colorful Christmas displays during that evening.

The elementary school Christmas concert will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 16.

On Dec. 18, the Indian Hill Trading Post will offer a men’s shopping night and the store will offer the same service to women Dec. 20.

The Community Christmas Choir will make a presentation at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22.

Moreland said a community Christmas carol sing and hayrides will be offered on Dec. 23. A community skating party will also be held that evening at the skating rink.

“In a community that is as small and remote as we are, it’s very important to keep the economy strong. By creating community spirit, we also feel that we help to create a spirit of support for the local economy,” Moreland said.
