In response to the callous question and statement written by William R. Bishop of Houlton (Readers Write, Oct. 18):
Bishop wonders how the taxpayers of the communities who sent 120 police cars to Brunswick for the funeral of police officer Jim Swint felt. He stated that our tax money would be better spent on true police business.
As a taxpayer, I commend the communities that sent the dedicated law enforcement officers to pay their respect.
If Bishop had done his homework, he would find that many of the law enforcement officers who attended the funderal did so on their own personal time. Police officers can’t schedule a funeral around their working hours. Many of these people are out risking their lives for all of us while many of us are home in our safe surroundings….
Bishop owes the family of Jim Swint an apology for his callous question and statement. It was all disrespectful and cruel. Susan M. Gagnon Presque Isle
