Head Smart class designed to reduce risk of heart disease

MARS HILL — A six-week cooking class titled, Heart Smart, will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 30-Dec. 4 at the Aroostook Health Center in Mars Hill in the Health Center Memorial Building.

The cooking class is based on the American heart Associations Culinary Heart’s Kitchen Course.

The Aroostook Medical Center’s registered dietitian Johanna Melchoire will conduct the course, which is designed to reduce risk of heart disease. Emphasis will be placed on how to reduce the intake of fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.

Participants may learn how to read and interpret nutrition labels on food packages, modify any recipe to meet the heart association guidelines, prepare heart healthy meals at home and how to make healthy choices when eating out. Preparing healthy holiday and special-occasion meals will be covered.

A fee will be charged and will include handouts, recipes and cooking demonstrations. Participants also will have an opportunity to sample all foods that are prepared.
