Thomaston open house to honor the elderly

THOMASTON — The public is invited to attend an open house at the Knox Hotel Apartments, 108 Main St., Thomaston, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12. This open house is part of a Life Review Project funded and sponsored by the Maine Arts Commission through the Johnson Hall Regional Site and the Methodist Conference Home.

The Congregate Housing Service Program for the elderly at the Knox Hotel Apartments maintains that older people are resources of enormous importance. The Life Review Project helped seniors recollect and use their past experiences to enhance the quality of their present and future lives.

Earlier in the year a series of six Life Review Workshops was conducted by folklorist Kathleen Mundell of the Maine Arts Commission and Jill Charbonneau, social worker and service director at Knox Hotel Apartments.

Personal, family and community histories were explored through photographs, heirlooms and albums. The Samoset Resort in Rockport hosted the participants for tea, sharing with them the old and the new at the Samoset. Trips to Mt. Battie in Camden, Port Clyde, St. George, Pemaquid, and Warren awakened memories for participants and helped them recognize and recall paths already traveled. The experience reinforced for many that each of their lives is a special story, worthwhile and unique.

Photographic portraits of the residents of Knox Hotel Apartments will be exhibited at the open house. Portraits were done by professional photographer Paule French, of Portland. French has worked for the Maine Photographic Workshop in Rockport for three summers. Her photographs capture the spirit of these residents who have created and experienced local history.

Stan Catell and Friends will join in the open house celebration. Catell’s orchestra will entertain residents and the community.

This open house at Knox Hotel Apartments will highlight the elderly as vital resources in our community.

The public is invited. Refreshments will be served and prizes awarded.
