CAMDEN — Sen. George Mitchell, majority leader of the U.S. Senate, has endorsed Sive Neilan in her bid to become the next Maine state senator representing District 21.
Mitchell volunteered to come to Camden to lend his support to her campaign. “I have known and worked with Sive for years,” said Mitchell. “She is informed, articulate and effective in representing values which I share. I want her to be your next Maine state senator.”
Neilan will oppose Sen. Linda Brawn, R-Camden, in the November election.
Mitchell and a committee of Neilan supporters entertained about 100 guests Aug. 11 at the Camden home of Jim and Cleo Perry.
Neilan, a resident of Hope, is program director for the Community Service Project in Rockland. She is a co-founder of New Hope for Women. She has owned and managed a book store in Rockport and Rockland and has served on various boards, councils, and political action groups.
In addressing supporters, Neilan highlighted several issues to which she is particularly committed, including women’s rights to reproductive choice and affordable health care in the 1990s.
