Doyle Field in Brewer will be the site of what may be the longest-running, highest-scoring softball game the Bangor area has ever seen Saturday.
The game, involving approximately 200 players from Brewer Farm League, Little League, and Senior Little League teams, is the result of a fund-raising effort by the Brewer Little League organization.
The 17-hour “marathon” fund-raiser will feature each team in the Brewer Little League’s three divisions – six from Farm League, five from Little League, and five Senior League teams.
Each team will play for an hour. A running score will be kept throughout all 17 hours and the final score will be the combined scoring totals of each hour-long game. In the last hour, an all-star team of adult officials and coaches will take on a team organized by the game’s official sponsor, the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Bangor.
The action begins at 6 a.m. and continues until 11 p.m.
Cary Butterfield, the fund-raising chairman for the Brewer Little League, came up with the idea of the marathon game to raise money for equipment purchases, field maintenance, and travel expenses for the state All-Star tournament playoffs.
The effort has attracted a lot of volunteer support.
“That’s what Little League is all about – volunteerism,” said Butterfield. “We’re hoping to raise $5,000. It’s a lot, but I think we can do it with a lot of support.”
